The Sydney-based artist was awarded the SOYA fashion prize in 2005 for her label Akina, which draws on sub-cultural groups like Tokyo’s Harajuku Girls for inspiration. Winning SOYA gave Lang the opportunity to travel to Japan to learn more about the culture she had admired from afar, and the invaluable support of her mentor, Peter Morrissey, helped her to lift her label to the next level, securing over 30 stockists in cutting-edge Harajuku as well as across Australia and New Zealand. Shifting her gaze into the realm of illustration, Lang has also participated in the group exhibition, GRRRLs, the Strange Worlds Exhibition at China Heights Gallery, and Gas at The Global Gallery as well as the Young Blood Designer Markets at Sydney’s Powerhouse Museum. Lang was also awarded a $25,000 Churchill Fellowship, which she will undertake in Tokyo and refocus her eye on the fashion world.
