Joan’s interest in photography and art developed through experiences laid open to her through her family. Her early interest carried through into practice during high school and later in her study of photography at the National Art School in Darlinghurst, Sydney. She’s since participated in a number of group shows and been selected to exhibit in Sydney Life, Art and About as well as being selected for the 2007 Hazelhurst Art Award for Works on Paper Prize and the Albury City National Photography Prize 2007, which was subsequently acquired by the gallery. Since her SOYA win Joan has been featured in the prestigious Photofile magazine and is currently using her SOYA winnings to work on a photography project in Poland.
